Discover Cuale River Island near Villa del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa, Puerto Vallarta

Isla de Cuale is a tiny, uninhabited island located in the middle of the Rio Cuale River. It was formed by an expanding river in 1926 and divided into two branches, offering a temporary island in between them. In the 1970s, it served as a public park and recreational area.  The “Isla del Rio Cuale,” or the Cuale River Island, is a peaceful and calm shade-rich haven in downtown Puerto Vallarta.  You can explore this beautiful island on your all-inclusive vacation to Puerto Vallarta.

What is the location of Cuale River Island?

The island’s name is derived from a river that begins 30 miles away in the mountains and runs through it. Cuale was a mining town where ancient artifacts have been discovered, some of which are on display at the Cuale Museum.

The Cualte River, one of the seven rivers that originate in the Sierra Madre Mountains and reach the Banderas Bay, divides Vallarta into its downtown area north of the river and its Romantic Zone (Old Vallarta) to the south.

There are two major road bridges. One is on Insurgentes St. (northbound) and the other is on Ignacio Vallarta St. (southbound). The island is connected to these bridges with steps that run down the street. There are a few hanging bridges available for pedestrians to use to get there.
